Heartbeat CD

Run run run.

That''s what twelve-year-old Annie loves to do. When she''s barefoot and running, she can hear her heart beating...

Thump-THUMP, thump-THUMP.

It''s a rhythm that makes sense in a year when everything''s shifting: Her mother is pregnant, her grandfather is forgetful, and her best friend, Max, is always moody. Everything is changing, just like the apple Annie''s been assigned to draw a hundred times.

Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech masterfully weaves this story about a young girl beginning to understand the many rhythms of life and how she fits within them.

Annotation:
Annie is a runner, and she's never happier than when running barefoot on the grass, listening to the "thump-thump, thump-thump" of her heart. Running and drawing seem to be her only anchors these days. As her grandfather, a former running champion, declines into senility, a new baby is soon to join her family. At 12, Annie is bewildered by all the changes, and can't even take refuge in her best friend, Max, who has become more competitive and distant. HEARTBEAT is written entirely in verse. Sharon Creech was awarded the 1995 Newbery Medal for WALK TWO MOONS.

Footfalls

Thump-thump, thump-thump
bare feet hitting the grass
as I run run run
in the air and like the air
weaving through the trees
skimming over the ground

touching down
thump-thump, thump-thump
here and there
there and here
in the soft damp grass

thump-thump, thump-thump
knowing I could fly fly fly
but letting my feet
thump-thump, thump-thump

touch the earth

at least for now . . .
