The Wilderness Directory; Published in Cooperation with the Wilderness Society
|
| | | A wilderness . . . is an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain. In 1964, the Wilderness Act designated some nine million acres as wilderness. Today, the National Wilderness Preservation System totals 104 million acres, with no roads, no structures, no vehicles, and no significant impacts of any kind. This handy directory includes information about acreage, managing agencies, unique natural features, ecosystem types, nearest city, access methods, and recreation opportunities for each wilderness area. Also features nearly 50 'areas of special concern' proposed for wilderness designation. R
