| Author Bio| William H. Gass | | William H. Gass grew up in Warren, Ohio, where his father taught engineering, drawing, and played semi-pro baseball. Gass decided to become a writer when he was 7 or 8. He chose the academic route, acquiring a Ph.D. in philosophy and teaching for many years at Washington University in St. Louis, where he received an endowed chair in 1979. In his fiction he is distinguished as a stylist, and has long admired the work of Gertrude Stein, John Barth, James Joyce, and Colette. His novel THE TUNNEL won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the American Book Award. He has also received awards from the National Book Critics Circle, and in 1997 was given the Lifetime Literary Achievement Award by the Lannan Foundation. |
